CiE Women in Computability Program

Women in Computer Science and Mathematics face particular challenges in pursuing and maintaining academic and scientific careers. Women are significantly underrepresented at all levels of the academic pipeline, while the very few female students involved in Computing and Mathematical Research need to be aware of their talent and role in the scientific community. Indeed, the scarcity of senior women academicians produces the lack of critical information about the culture and content required for pursuing careers in the mathematical sciences. It is for this reason that the Computability in Europe association has been coordinating a Women in Computability program since 2007, hosted during the annual CiE conference. In 2016 then, after the new ACiE constitution allowed for the possibility of creating special interest groups, a proposal for the establishment of an ACiE Special Interest Group Women in Computability.

Our aim is to offer an opportunity to discuss matters related to women in computer science, logic and mathematics and to increase female participation in the CiE conference series. Since 2016, the WiC program is sponsored by ACM’s Women in Computing. This program includes a workshop, the annual WiC diner, the mentorship program and a grant program for young female researchers.

Women in Computability Travel Grants

We are very happy to announce the availability of four grants of up to 250 EUR for junior female researchers who want to participate in CiE 2017.  Applications for this grant should be send to Liesbeth De Mol before 15 May 2017 and include a short cv (at most 2 pages) and contact information for an academic reference. Preference will be given to junior female researchers who are presenting a paper (including informal presentations) at CiE 2017.

Women in Computability Workshop and dinner

The Women in Computability workshop aims to bring together women in Computing and Mathematical research to present and exchange their academic and scientific experience with young researchers. The meeting will offer the CIE scientific community the opportunity to encourage young students, especially young female researchers, to have active careers in the mathematical and computational sciences. The CIE community will also discuss on the status of women in Computability research. The workshop is followed by the annual WiC diner to which all participants are cordially invited.

Women in Computability Workshop Program

The Women in Computability Workshop has invited the following Speakers.

Mentorship Programme

The mentorship program allows junior female researchers to meet senior women in their field, discuss career issues with them and get their support. Junior female researchers who wish to participate in this programme will be assigned a mentor for the duration of the conference with whom they will meet several times, including a dinner invitation with other junior researchers and the mentors. We hope that the ties between mentor and mentee will be strong enough to allow continued discussions after the CiE conference and that this initiative will help to foster a strong community among women in computing and mathematical research.

If you are a junior female researcher, please contact Liesbeth De Mol (liesbeth.demol@univ-lille3.fr) to be added to the list of participants. If you are an established female researcher and would like to participate as a mentor, we would be very happy about an e-mail as well.
