2018: Jean-Éric Pin

The first international Salomaa Prize was awarded to Dr. Jean-Éric Pin from Paris. The prize ceremonies took place in Tokyo, in the annual DLT (Developments in Language theory) conference. More information on the DLT home page: http://math.utu.fi/dlt/.

Jean-Éric Pin is one of the leading researchers in automata theory. He has published a number of fundamental contributions, in particular in algebraic automata theory, during his forty-year career. Currently he is editing a two-volume 1500-page Handbook on Automata.
